ATHENS, Ohio -- Among those recently inducted into the Ohio Communication Hall of Fame are the past president of CBS News and Fox News, the past editor-in-chief of Cox Newspapers, a radio entrepreneur and a committed Ohio University campaign spokeswoman. Inductees include Charles Glover, Rolland Johnson, Van Gordon Sauter and Joan Herrold Wood.
The Hall of Fame celebrates lifetime achievement of communication professionals. All four 2003 inductees were College of Communication alumni, though that is not a criterion for Hall of Fame inclusion. Each member of the Ohio Communication Hall of Fame must have a tie to Ohio (either the state or the university).
Glover began his career as a general assignment reporter for the Dayton Journal Herald, became president of Cox Enterprises and retired from Cox Newspapers in 1989. He authored "Journey Through the Years: The Story of Cox Enterprises" and the weekly New York Times syndicated World War II Series, published in 600 newspapers worldwide from 1991 to 1995. Glover is a World War II veteran.
Johnson is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Three Eagles Communications, Inc., based in Lincoln, Neb. Three Eagles is a private company that owns and operates small and medium market radio stations in Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota and South Dakota. Currently, Johnson is the District 16 representative of the National Association of Broadcasters.
Sauter, former president of CBS News and Fox News, has spent more than 30 years working in print and broadcast journalism. As a print journalist, he covered a wide range of stories including the civil rights movement, urban riots and the Vietnam War. Sauter is also the co-author of two books, "Nightmare in Detroit," a profile of the Detroit riots, and "Fabled Land, Timeless River," a photo-test book about the Mississippi River.
Herrold Wood received the first Joan Herrold Wood Award for Lifetime Commitment, an award named in her honor for appreciation of lifelong support of Ohio University and the College of Communication.
Wood worked as a feature writer for The Pittsburgh Press before pursuing a career in public relations. She served as the account executive and supervisor at the J. Walter Thompson Company, then as vice president of the broadcast services department of Richard Weiner, Inc., before starting Wood Public Relations in 1987. She has been involved in every major Ohio University fundraising campaign since her 1952 graduation and also has been named Ohio University's Alumna of the Year.
