Take Back the Night features speakers

ATHENS, Ohio -- The Women's Affairs Commission of Ohio University Student Senate and University Program Council are excited to announce that Jennifer Baumgardner and Amy Richards, co-authors of "Manifesta: Young Women, Feminism and the Future," will be speaking on Thursday, May 15, at 7:30 p.m. on the West Portico of College Green.

Baumgardner and Richards are nationally-known figures in the next generation of the feminist movement. Their book is one of inclusion and active participation in the fight to win more rights for women around the world. The speakers specifically appeal to the age demographic of the traditional college student, making their message ideal for a campus event.

"These women challenge the stereotype of what it means to be a feminist and present the movement in a way that is more accesible to a wider audience," said Breanne Scanlon, women's affairs commissioner of Ohio University Student Senate. "Their book brings feminist issues to a younger generation."

The speakers are part of the annual Take Back the Night rally and march. Take Back the Night is designed to address gender-based sterotypes and violence, as well as unify and celebrate the empowerment of women. Take Back the Night will feature workshops and various events the week leading up to the rally and march.

All are welcome to attend this event and admission is free. For more information on Take Back the Night activities, please e-mail Breanne Scanlon at breanne_elizabeth@yahoo.com.

University Program Council regularly presents films, special events, lectures, concerts and comedians on Ohio University's campus. The group, an arm of the Office of Student Activities, is always looking for more members and input on its programs.

Please call (740) 593-4060 or e-mail upcevent@ohiou.edu with questions or comments or if you are interested in becoming involved.
