ATHENS, Ohio -- Matthew Hunter, an Ohio University senior from Bolingbrook, Ill., and graduate of Bolingbrook High School, has been awarded the George C. Marshall Award, distinguishing him as the top Army ROTC cadet at the university.
Hunter recently accepted the award during a National Security Seminar in historic Lexington, Va., where he had the opportunity to directly interact with the most outstanding Army ROTC cadets from every university across the nation and explore a broad range of national security issues.
"ROTC has been an integral part of my college career and I feel fortunate to have been involved with it here at Ohio University," Hunter said. "ROTC has taught me many important leadership skills that I will carry into my future with the military."
Hunter, who is majoring in political science, has served as Cadet Battalion Commander for his Army ROTC unit and vice president of the Student Senate.
"Matthew represents the caliber of student that we are proud to have in our ranks," said Lt. Colonel Douglas Orr, Ohio University professor of military science. "He demonstrates unrelenting perseverance, leadership skills and decisiveness -- the essential qualities that will shape the future of the United States military."
