ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine will sponsor Research Day on Friday, Sept. 27, an event designed to showcase research by the college's faculty and staff on everything from Antarctic fish to hypertension.
The day's highlight will be a poster session from noon to 1 p.m. in the foyer of Irvine Hall, a program that will feature the work of dozens of faculty and students. The posters will remain on display throughout the weekend.
"The research performed at OU-COM encompasses a wide range of fields; ranging from dinosaurs to the clinical evaluation of osteopathic manipulative treatment," said Bonita Biegalke, Ph.D., an associate professor of virology and chair of the Research and Scholarly Affairs Committee, which organized Research Day. "Thirty-six posters will be on display describing some of the research projects being conducted at OU-COM. Many of the projects are conducted by students at Ohio University, undergraduate, graduate and medical students."
Faculty in OU-COM are involved with a variety of research projects, including efforts funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the American Heart Association and other such agencies.
Posters on display during Research Day cover research supported by the OU-COM Office of Research and Grants. The office supports such initiatives as the Research and Scholarly Advancement Fellowship Program, which teams second-year medical students with OU-COM faculty mentors in basic and clinical research. The office also provides seed money to faculty researchers, which is used to jumpstart research projects that will later vie for other competitive funding programs, both inside and outside the university.
Research Day is open to the public.
