AM Rotary and Indian Student Association to celebrate Indian culture in evening of entertainment

ATHENS, Ohio -- The Athens AM International Rotary Club and the Ohio University Indian Student Association will come together to provide an hour of live entertainment 5 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 22, in Baker Center Ballroom.

The event will feature Indian folk, classical and pop dances jointly performed by Rotarians, university students, members of the Athens Indian community and Athens High School students. The groups will also perform skits and stand-up on the experiences of a new Indian student at Ohio University and will enact an authentic Indian wedding.

"Ohio University students are budding Rotarians of the future," said Gitanjali Kaul, Rotarian and advisor to the Indian Student Association, "and we are delighted to offer programming that will highlight their talents and involves them in service activities."

An authentic Indian dinner will be served following the show at 6:30 p.m. and will be catered by the Athens Indian restaurant, Star of India.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Polio Plus and Assistance for Visually Impaired in India. Tickets are $25 per adult, $15 for children under 12 or a table for eight can be sponsored for $200.

The celebration is designed as annual event that would feature a new country every year and will compliment service activities of Rotary members.

Performing hand-in-hand with the students, Rotarians hope the fundraiser will promote world citizenship by showing a genuine interest in understanding cultures around the world while helping to improve the quality of life for others. The performances will be a symbolic reminder of how one can understand history, culture and the goals and aspirations of people in a global community.

"I was a bit intimidated about learning to do Indian but my new friends in the Indian Student Association have made it all so much fun," said Kristina Gerig, Rotarian, Athens AM International Rotary Club. "We are enjoying ourselves very much and looking forward to sharing our hard work with the community."

Anyone wanting to learn more about the event is welcome to attend rehearsal Saturday, September 21 in Baker Center Ballroom from 5 to 7 p.m or Sunday, September 22, in the ballroom from 1 to 3 p.m.
