ATHENS, Ohio -- Dr. Janet Eyler of Vanderbilt University will join faculty interested in the topic of experiential education April 3 and 4.
Eyler has explored a number of different experiential pedagogies through her research, including internships and service-learning. Most recently she has examined the contributions of these experiential learning models to cognitive development, problem solving, transfer of learning and civic engagement.
The author of numerous articles and co-director of a service-learning research project, she is also co-author of "Where's the Learning in Service-Learning" (1999), recipient of the Outstanding Research Award from the National Society for Experiential Education.
Eyler will present her research at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 3, Scripps Auditorium. The event is open to all and a reception will follow.
Eyler will work with Ohio University faculty interested in joining a new research project funded by the 1804 Fund from 9 a.m. to noon and 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 4, in Baker Center. The project will:
- Examine the literature on experiential learning and reflection
- Redesign a course to incorporate experiential learning and reflection
- Conduction action research on student learning in that class
- Contribute the research to a planned book on the topic
Faculty who are selected to participate in the project will receive a summer stipend of up to $750, $375 in research funds and support from the project graduate assistant. Completed research studies will be submitted for presentation at the National Lilly Conference on College Teaching, in addition to being considered for publication.
