Master of Social Work program gains accreditation

ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio University master of social work program has gained initial accreditation from the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE). This designation is vital because most states, including Ohio, restrict licensure only to graduates of accredited social work programs.

The master of social work (MSW) is recognized in every state as the terminal degree for social work practice, making it one of the most portable human-service degrees. A master of social work is also a highly prized degree outside of the United States. Ohio University's MSW program offers concentrations in clinical and administrative practice -- both meeting important, unmet needs, said Susan Sarnoff, graduate chair of the department of social work.

"We pride ourselves in the fact that the program meets critical needs on two levels: nationally, for rural-focused social work programs; and locally, to fill a critical shortage of MSWs in the region," Sarnoff said.

The two-year, full-time program requires students to complete 90 credit hours as well as 900 hours spent on field internships with community agencies in a 21-county area. Internship parameters include child welfare, community action, corrections, victim services, geriatrics, health, mental health, program planning and evaluation, public welfare and substance abuse. Also offered is a one-year advanced standing option, designed for graduates of accredited undergraduate social work programs who have exceptional grades, references and field experience.

In an end-of-the-year survey, one MSW student said "the department meets student needs and consistently requests feedback." Another said, "I feel valued and respected," while others praised the program's "family-like atmosphere" and the efforts made to meet community needs.

"We are very pleased at the feedback we have gotten about the program from students, graduates and the community," Sarnoff said. "We work hard at being available to students and respecting their concerns. We recognize that our program is demanding of both time and rigor, but we strive to make sure that no student gets lost in the process."

Part of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Social Work has operated a bachelor's program since 1952. This undergraduate track has been consistently accredited since CSWE began accreditation in 1974.
