ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University's Department of African American Studies and the MulticulturalGenealogical Center of Chesterhill, Ohio, will host the second annual Community and Campus Day onSaturday, Feb. 15, at Nelson Commons.
Equipped with a theme of "A Tribute to Family," the event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and consists of a variety of activities and booths that celebrate the history and accomplishments of people of color.
The event will include exhibits from artists, historians, photographers and painters, handmade quilts, book readings for children sponsored by the Athens County Libraries, face painting, historical artifacts and Underground Railroad memorabilia. The mayors of Athens and Chesterhill, Ohio, will be in attendance and Ohio University President Robert Glidden will deliver a welcoming address.
Representatives of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine will be on site giving complimentary blood sugar and high blood pressure screenings throughout the event.
Historian and author Henry Burke of Marietta, Ohio, and Ohio University alumni Alvin and Ada Adams, who helped found the Multicultural Genealogical Center, will share some of the rich history of people of color in the Ohio River Valley.
Glenn Barnett, a native of Barnett Ridge, Ohio, will use his genealogical computer database to help people research their family roots.
Ohio University graduate student photographer Regina Boone and historian/collector David Butcher are among the exhibitors scheduled for the event.
Some of the scheduled entertainment includes Ohio University Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology Frank Gunderson's African drumming class, singers Emily Butcher and Irvin Mayle, area choirs, musician Phillip Tabler and poet Nicole Griffin.
Community and Campus Day is a part of Ohio University's annual celebration of Black History Month in the month of February. The celebration features speakers, art exhibits, conferences, video presentations and performances that celebrate and discuss the significant contributions of people of color in America.
