ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University student Leslie Thornton, a senior majoring in organizational communication, plans to turn her avocation into her chosen vocation and make a career out of community service.
"I know, for certain, that I want to work for a non-profit organization," said Thornton, a Westerville, Ohio, native. "At first, I thought I wanted to help with breast cancer research, but now I would like to work for prevention of violence against women."
After serving on the United Campus Ministry: Center for Spiritual Growth and Social Justice's (UCM) board for a year and a half, Thornton assumed the position of paid spiritual growth intern at the beginning of the 2001-02 academic year. In this position, she plans fundraisers, coordinates volunteers and plans discussion groups that have a social justice theme.
One popular discussion group involves the animated TV series, "The Simpsons." The group watches an episode of the program and discusses topics like male gender roles, relationships and divorce.
Participating in community service activities is a very humbling experience, she said. "To see how much difference a volunteer can make to an organization and to a community is something I will take into the real world," Thornton said.
In addition to her work at UCM, Thornton is an intern with the university's Center for Community Service. She recruits volunteers, helps students find volunteer projects and assists with the volunteer recognition program.
Thornton also participates in volunteer activities with the staff. Because of her exemplary work in community service, Thornton received an annual $2,000 scholarship in exchange for her work with the Center for Community Service. Community service has been an important part of her college career and Thornton has learned practical skills that will last a lifetime.
"I have learned an immense amount of skills, including how to work with a low budget, how to work with diversity and learning the importance of being a volunteer."
