Finalists named for Ohio University provost position
ATHENS, Ohio -- The four finalists for the provost position at Ohio University in Athens will be on campus for interviews the first three weeks in November. The finalists were selected from a field of approximately 50 applicants for the position and were among eight with whom off-site interviews were recently conducted.
The finalists include:
- Fred Kitterle, dean of liberal arts and sciences at Northern Illinois University, Nov. 4-6. He has been at his current position since 1995. Kitterle earned the A.B. degree from Merrimack College, his M.A. degree from Assumption College and his Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
- Herman Saatkamp, dean of liberal arts at Indiana and Purdue University-Indianapolis, Nov. 12-14. He has been at his current position since 1998. Saatkamp earned his B.A. degree from Carson-Newman College, his M.Div. degree from Southern Theological Seminary and his M.A. degree and Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University.
- Steve Kopp, dean of the College of Health Professions at Central Michigan University, Nov. 14-16. He has been at his current position since 1997. Kopp earned his B.S. from the University of Notre Dame and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
- Robert Hampton, associate provost for academic affairs and dean for undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland, Nov. 18-20. Hampton earned his bachelor's degree from Princeton University and his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan.
While on campus, the candidates will speak with students, faculty, administrators and Ohio University Board of Trustees members. There will be an opportunity for members of the university community to meet and ask questions of the candidates during open sessions at 4:30 p.m. in Templeton-Blackburn Memorial Auditorium on the following dates: Kitterle, Nov. 5; Saatkamp, Nov. 13; Kopp, Nov. 15; and Wartella, Nov. 19.
The goal is to name a new provost by early January 2002 and to have the individual in office by July 1. Gary Schumacher has been interim provost since July 1, replacing Sharon Brehm, who resigned to take the positions of chancellor of the Bloomington campus and vice president for academic affairs at Indiana University.
