Bobcat Athletics hosts busy weekend

ATHENS, Ohio -- This week, Bobcat fans can look forward to a busy weekend of sporting activities in Athens.

The Ohio football team hosts Miami in a 3 p.m. game that will help decide the Mid-American Conference East Division. The Bobcats also will be looking to build on their first win of the season, a 34-3 decision last Saturday at Central Michigan. Saturday's game marks Green and White Club Day at the stadium. The game will be broadcast live as part of the MAC television package on Fox Sports Net. Michael Reghi will handle play-by-play, Charles Arbuckle will serve as color commentator and Bill Neeland will work the sidelines for the broadcast.

Planned game day activities include a pre-game performance from the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute team and the GMAC Bowl Contest at halftime. During the GMAC contest, three Ohio University students will compete for a $1,000 scholarship and complimentary trip for two to the Mid-American Conference Championship Game. Tickets can be purchased from the Athletics Ticket Office by calling (740) 593-1300 or 1-800-575-CATS.

The Ohio University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is sponsoring a canned food drive at Peden Stadium before the Miami football game. Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable canned goods to the game, with all donations going to the benefit of Athens County Children Services.

After suffering a pair of one-goal losses at home last week to nationally-ranked Kent State and Michigan, the 13th-ranked Ohio field hockey team will close out its home schedule against Miami at 2 p.m. Friday and Louisville at 1 p.m. Saturday. Peggy Pruitt Field will be dedicated at halftime of the Louisville game. The field was named in honor of Pruitt, who worked in the Ohio University Department of Athletics from 1975 to 2001. After coaching the women's tennis and field hockey teams during her tenure, she retired last June as the department's Senior Associate Athletics Director and Senior Women's Administrator. The games are at Peggy Pruitt Field and are free to the public.

The women's soccer team hosts Toledo at 4 p.m. on Friday and Bowling Green at 1 p.m. Sunday. The games will be played at Shafer Street Soccer Field and are free to the public.

Also on Friday, the Bobcats swimming and diving team will open the 2001 season at the Ohio Aquatic Center with their annual intra-squad meet at 6 p.m. The intra-squad meet divides the Bobcats into teams. They will compete in the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle, individual medley, and diving events. Admission is free to all Ohio swimming and diving meets at the Aquatic Center.
