Flu shot clinics available for southeastern Ohio residents from Oct. 26 through Nov. 9

ATHENS, Ohio -- Flu season will arrive within the next couple of months. Annually, between five and 15 percent of the U.S. population succumbs to flu viruses, resulting in millions of days of lost productivity and millions of dollars in unnecessary medical expenses.

"Flu shots are one of the best preventive health-care measures we have available," said Kathy Trace, director of Community Service Programs. "Our vaccinations are very safe and enable the body to produce antibodies that fight flu viruses. 'An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure' -- that's especially true when it comes to flu shots."

From Friday, Oct. 26 through Friday, Nov. 9, Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine's Community Service Programs will be providing six influenza clinics for the people of Southeastern Ohio at community clinic sites in Athens. Flu vaccinations will be available for persons 65 years and older. Vaccinations are also available for those under 65 years old with one or more of the following health problems: heart, lung or kidney disease; asthma; diabetes; or anemia or other blood disorders. The cost is $5 per vaccination or, if you bring your Medicare card, Medicare can be billed.

"We encourage people to attend these clinics, which will be well staffed and convenient. Free parking is available, and the locations offer easy access for the elderly and handicapped," said Lynn Smith, nurse coordinator of CSP's immunization clinics.
