ATHENS, Ohio -- Nasdaq U.S. Markets President J. Patrick Campbell visited the Ohio University campus on Oct. 5 and shared his thoughts on the nation's economy and the stock market following the events of Sept. 11. Campbell came to campus as a guest of the College of Business.
"It has been rather emotional lately, but the Federal Reserve System and the stock markets put their competitive juices aside and worked together for the good of the national economy and national capital markets," Campbell said. "Terrorism has never won out and as the rest of the world comes together to deal with it, there will be a huge change from where things have been before."
Campbell warned investors not to panic in regards to the economy, because markets tend to overreact to good and bad news.
"Markets have trouble digesting uncertainty, but I think the Federal Reserve and the leadership is committed to making sure that our economy gets back on track," he stated. "Things appear headed in the right direction but it will take some time."
As far as advice to the average investor in the stock market, Campbell says your time frame is the key because the market will inevitably return to normal.
"Let the markets do what they have to do," he advised. "Determine your time frame and the amount of risk you can afford and balance what you have in the market. People need to make informed decisions as opposed to emotional ones. That has always been and always will be the case."
As chief operating officer and executive vice president of The Nasdaq Stock Market, Inc., Campbell is responsible for the day-to-day operations of The Nasdaq Stock Market and all of its services. His responsibilities include developing and delivering products to the market, the profit or loss of products, product design and development and delivery of solutions.
"My job is to make sure our markets are open and transparent," he said. "We want companies to be able to access and raise capital and create jobs. At Nasdaq, we want to reward creativity, innovation and hard work."
Campbell is a 1971 graduate of Ohio University and is a member of its College of Business Executive Advisory Board. He also is a retired U.S.A.F. Command Pilot who has earned a Bronze Star and three air medals.
