John Brose Named Dean of College of Osteopathic Medicine

ATHENS, Ohio - John A. (Jack) Brose, D.O., of Athens has been named dean of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-COM), effective Nov. 15, it was announced today by Interim Provost Gary Schumacher. Dr. Brose, who has served as assistant dean of clinical research since 1994, has been a faculty member in the college's Department of Family Medicine since 1982.

Brose has a strong background as an educator and administrator. He has received the Outstanding Clinical Faculty Award 19 times and recently was recognized as the 2001 Educator of the Year by the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians. He has been director of the Predoctoral Family Medicine Fellowship Program since 1983. Brose was associate chairman of the Department of Family Medicine from 1991 to 1992 and assistant dean for educational development and research from 1992 to 1994.

"I'm most pleased that Jack Brose has accepted our offer to be the new dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Brose is a highly regarded medical educator who also has proven administrative experience," said Ohio University President Robert Glidden. "His intimate knowledge of the college, his collegial administrative style and his broad contacts nationally within both the osteopathic and allopathic medical communities impressed the search committee. He has a rare combination of excellence in clinical medicine, research, education and administration. Jack also is very committed to the college's legislative mission of training primary care physicians for Ohio's underserved areas. I feel confident that under his capable leadership, our medical school will continue to be a national leader in primary care education."

Brose replaces Interim Dean Daniel Marazon, who has held that position since January.

"The College of Osteopathic Medicine has met its mandate by providing superior medical training and graduating one of the highest percentages of primary care physicians in the United States," Brose said. "As dean, I hope to build upon this outstanding record by increasing the scope of medical care available to southeastern Ohio, enhancing our research program and supporting one of the country's finest residency training systems. A primary focus of my administration will be on communication. I want to ensure that everyone in the college and at our affiliated hospitals feels that their voices are being heard."

Brose earned a bachelor's degree from Gettysburg (Pa.) College and a Doctor of Osteopathy from the University of North Texas Health Science Center at the Fort Worth-Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth, Texas. He held a postdoctoral fellowship from Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Brose completed a family practice residency at the United States Air Force Medical Center Scott at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., serving as chief resident from 1978 to 1979. He continued as director of resident evaluation in the Family Practice Residency Program at Scott AFB until 1982.

"I am delighted that Jack Brose has agreed to serve as the next dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine," Schumacher said. "He brings an exceptional set of skills and knowledge to the position of dean. His extensive experience in medical education, his commitment to medical research and his excellent interpersonal skills will help him provide strong leadership for the college."

Brose is certified by both the American Osteopathic Board of Family Practice and the American Board of Family Practice. He is a two-time president of the Athens-Hocking Academy of Family Physicians.
