Ohio University's College of Education, Park National Corporation Host Education Lecture
ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University's College of Education and Park National Corporation are partnering to address teacher education and quality issues in Ohio. To support this dialogue they will host a lecture from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at the Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio. The first annual lecture's theme is "What Can Be Done To Ensure Teaching Success?"
The keynote speaker is Barnett Berry, interim director of the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future (NCTAF) and executive director of the Southeast Center for Teaching Quality. He is a policy analyst with extensive program and research development experience in the area of teacher policy. Berry has taught in an inner-city high school and was a professor of education leadership at the University of South Carolina.
Focusing on fundamental challenges such as funding, curriculum, quality of instruction, governance, testing, competency and discipline, the goal of the lecture series is to provide a forum for discussion and meaningful exchange not only among educators, but also among policy makers, government officials, parents, members of the business community, social agencies and other interested parties.
"The first event in the Education Lecture Series may well frame discussion for members of the Governor's Commission on Teaching Success over this coming year," said James L. Heap, dean of the College of Education. "With the generous support of the Park National Corporation, the Education Lecture Series will provide an opportunity over the next four years for stakeholders in education to address issues in Ohio within the context of significant research, national trends and policy initiatives."
NCTAF is a consortium of 20 states that supports research-based policy efforts designed to transform teacher development in the United States. Berry, who has appeared on national media discussing issues pertaining to teacher education, is a nationally recognized speaker, lecturer and researcher.
Following the keynote address will be a panel discussion and response session. Panel members will be Robert Hite, director of the Center for the Teaching Profession, Ohio Department of Education; Jayne Burger, Governor's Teacher-In-Residence; and Chad Wick, CEO of KnowledgeWorks Foundation.
