The Institute for Democracy in Education Holds Conference

ATHENS, Ohio -- The Institute for Democracy in Education will give educators and others a voice during its annual conference Oct. 11 to 13 on Ohio University's Athens campus.

The conference, "In Our Own Voices: Reclaiming Our Classrooms, Schools, Democracy," will feature workshops and several guest speakers dedicated to teaching democratic principles in schools and the community. Keynote speakers include Ruth Yellow Hawk, National and Indigenous Issues Forums; Linda Christensen, author of Reading, Writing, & Rising Up; Patrick Finn, author of Literacy with an Attitude; and Nancy Nagel, service learning specialist and author of Learning Through Real-World Problem Solving.

"Given the recent tragic events in our nation and world, it is especially salient to address how each of us can understand our world and feel that we are empowered to make a difference," said Jaylynne Hutchinson, director of the Institute for Democracy in Education. "The guest speakers will conduct interactive workshops on a wide range of topics that address everything from proficiency testing to our misunderstandings of the Arab world to incorporating art and media literacy into the curriculum. But above everything else, our conference highlights the responsibility each of us has to act as empowered democratic citizens to make our schools, our communities, our nation and world a more just and equitable place."

Conference participants are invited to attend interactive workshops that focus on incorporating democracy into classrooms. Special presentations include the film, "thisiswhatdemocracylookslike" Thursday, Oct. 11, at 8 p.m. in Scripps Auditorium presented by Big Noise Films, and an original play entitled "Cracks in the Silence" performed by Christopher Drajem Friday, Oct. 12, at 8 p.m. in McCracken Hall.

Registration forms can be picked up in McCracken Hall, room 312A. There is a small fee for registration. For more information, registration, and a schedule of events, please visit the institute's Web site at www.ohiou.edu/ide or contact IDE at democracy@ohiou.edu or (740) 593-4531.

The institute, housed in Ohio University's McCracken Hall, is committed to promoting democracy in education and involving all participants in the educational process including teachers, administrators, students and parents.
