Pacemaker inventor to visit campus
Wilson Greatbatch, inventor of the first human heart pacemaker and co-recipient of the Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ Prize, will present a lecture titled "Your Ticket to Mars, Sir. First Class or Coach?" at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, in Stocker Center's Robe Auditorium.
The talk will explore space travel to Mars and the spaceships that will carry the adventurous passengers. A reception in the lobby will follow the lecture.
A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Greatbatch began developing the implantable pacemaker while at Taber Instrument Corp., in Tonawanda, N.Y. Today, Greatbatch helps to advance research in genetics, nuclear power generation and MRI-compatible pacemakers.
The Russ Prize was established in 1999 to recognize outstanding achievement in an engineering field that is of critical importance and that contributes to the advancement of science and engineering. The prize, which is awarded biennially, is supported through a multi-million dollar endowment to Ohio University from alumnus Fritz Russ and his wife, Dolores.
