Ohio University student to represent five-state region for advancement program

ATHENS, Ohio -- Brandis Thornton, president of the Ohio University Student Alumni Board, has been elected to represent students from a five-state region who are involved in enhancing student and alumni relations.

Thornton will serve as the Association of Student Advancement Programs' District 5 representative for a two-year term. She will be responsible for coordinating all district programming, representing the district on the Association of Student Advancement Programs' executive board and recruiting new members. District 5 includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

"Brandis has really proved her professionalism," said Jennifer Heisey, assistant director of outreach and engagement for the Ohio University Alumni Association. "This is something she is committed to, and I have no reservations that she'll do a great job."

The Ohio University Student Alumni Board also will be responsible for hosting the District 5 conference in Spring 2003. The three-day conference is expected to attract some 300 students from the 50 member institutions in the Great Lakes region as well as from other institutions with student advancement programs.

"The students are very excited. They are extremely proud of the campus and look forward to putting on a fun, professional conference for other schools," said Heisey, who will serve as the District 5 adviser for the next two years.

Thornton is sophomore dietetics major from Kingston, Ohio. She recently was the Alumni Board Richard Polen Member of the Quarter and is a member of the Future Dietitians' Club and the Ohio University Council of Student Leaders. She volunteers for Athens County Women, Infants and Children and has received numerous scholarships.

She is the daughter of Tammy and Craig Thornton of Kingston and a 2000 graduate of Zane Trace High School in Chillicothe.

The Association of Student Advancement Programs is an alliance of student organizations that provides for networking and leadership development to promote student involvement in educational advancement.

It is an association of student alumni organizations at more than 360 higher education institutions across North America, all with the common goal of enriching student advancement programming. The program is a part of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, an organization for professionals who work in alumni relations, communications and development.

The Ohio University Student Alumni Board was established in 1978 to enhance student and alumni relations. The board supports the mission of the alumni association, introduces current students to the alumni association and educational services available to them as alumni and exposes them to the professional field of institutional advancement. The board also fosters future volunteer leaders, enhances undergraduate education and provides networking with alumni.
