ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University and Athens community members are invited to attend the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, May 19, outside of Scripps Hall.
In addition to addressing the global impact of AIDS, speakers will emphasize the affect of the disease in southeastern Ohio. Assistant Vice president for Alumni Relations Ralph Amos will discuss AIDS and southeastern Ohio, and Nathalie Bretton of the Athens AIDS Task Force will discuss area services that are available. Participants are invited to share testimonials and tributes.
The event offers participants the opportunity to be part of a global commemoration. Similar vigils will be held in more than 1,000 communities in 85 countries worldwide. The vigil, which was first organized in 1983, is intended to honor the memory of those lost to AIDS, show support for those living with HIV/AIDS, raise awareness of the disease and mobilize community involvement. The theme for this year's event is "Share your vision for a brighter tomorrow."
"The vigil offers an opportunity for individuals to dedicate themselves, either for the first time or once again, to the fight against AIDS, both globally and locally," said Charlene Kopchick, director of health education and wellness at Ohio University.
In the case of rain, the event will be held at Galbreath Chapel.
The Ohio University commemoration is sponsored by the Ohio University Department of Health Education and Wellness, Division of Student Affairs and POWER (Promoting Ohio University Wellness Education Responsibility).
