ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University's Southern Campus will host three performances of Herrmann's Original Royal Lipizzan Stallions of Austria at 7 p.m. Friday, May 3, and 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, at the Ohio Horse Park.
The Lipizzans starred in Walt Disney's 1963 movie "Miracle of the White Stallions" and are known for their exceptional intelligence and athletic ability. They entertain audiences by performing a program filled with impressive jumps and maneuvers.
One of the oldest horse breeds in the world, Lipizzans have been traced to the Romans in the mid-1500s. The Herrmann family has bred and trained the breed for six generations dating to the reign of Austrian Emperor Ferdinand II. The Herrmann Ranch is located in Myakka City, Fla.
"These horses have lots of history and are wonderful athletes," said Connie Mays, director of Ohio University's equine studies program. "Lipizzans perform things you usually don't see horses do and are truly spectacular."
Advance tickets cost $6 for children 6 to 12 years of age and $10 for adults. There is an additional $2 charge for each ticket purchased at the gate. Group rates are available. For tickets or more information, call 1-800-626-0513 or (740) 533-4551.
The Ohio Horse Park consists of 184 acres in Franklin Furnace, Ohio, located about 14 miles from Ironton.
