ATHENS, Ohio -- Curiosity, the desire to explore who we are, both individually and
collectively, is what drives us to museums. "Athens Collects," which will be exhibited May 4 through August 18, transforms the Kennedy Museum into a collective cabinet that reflects the imagination, diversity and inquisitiveness of the local community.
"Athens Collects" will open in conjunction with Ohio University's Mom's Weekend with a reception featuring a "collection" of Athens food from 4 to 7 p.m. Participating merchants include: Athens Own, Ohio University Baker Center Catering Services, Casa Nueva, Kroger, Lui Lui Restaurant, Mistretta's Italian Market, and Purple Chopstix. A $5 donation is suggested.
Athens collectors featured in the exhibit are: Anne Braxton, Joan Seder, Jody Lamb, Gary Schwindler, George Weckman, Sam Booth, Greg Anderson, Ann Burkhardt, OU Child Development Center, Passion Works, Ed Fisher, Michael Harper, Jim Wetzel, Mike Ritchie, Jaime Yant & Emilie Ginther, Amanda Bosley, Robin Lacey, Judith Svendsen, Martha Bratton, Jacquie Lindquist, Brooke Hallowell, Lisa L. Patterson, Anne Cooper-Chen, Michael Miller, Liam Hassett, Paul Tescher, Ed Newman, Barbara Ernst, Tommy Freeman and two anonymous collectors. Featured collections include such diverse themes as Russian folk art, Elvis, East Indian art, Marilyn Monroe, African American Barbies and baseball cards.
The Kennedy Museum of Art is located in Lin Hall on The Ridges section of the Ohio University campus. Admission and parking are free. From Route 682 at the intersection of Richland Ave. take Rt. 682 less than 1/4 mile to N. Ridge Drive. Turn left on E. Circle Drive, parking is on the left across from the museum.
The museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from noon to 5 p.m.; Thursday, noon to 8 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m. Gallery guides are available to discuss the exhibitions and the museum building on most Saturdays at 1:30 p.m.
The Ohio Arts Council helped fund these exhibitions with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.
