Divine drummer brings African percussion to Baker Center Thursday

ATHENS, Ohio -- The drums of Ghana are coming to Ohio University's Baker Center Front Room at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 25.

Agya Boakye-Boaten, designated a "divine drummer" in 1996 for his "ability to communicate with the spirits," will perform on the djembe, kidi, sogo, dondon, and daruo for 45 minutes and then will invite audience participation on the drums.

Boakye-Boaten describes his performance as a "percussion explosion delving into traditional kinds of African rhythms and bringing them to life in a modern context with other musical cultures from around the world."

A graduate student in the African Studies program at Ohio University, Boakye-Boaten has taught drumming and dance workshops to children.

Tickets are $3 and can be purchased at the door.

The event is sponsored by the Ohio University African Studies program.
