Students team up with local organizations to benefit the older residents of Athens

ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio University Center for Community Service, the Corporation for Ohio Appalachian Development (COAD), the Appalachian Leadership Academy (ALA) and the Athens Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) have joined forces to create a service project, "Community Roots," to benefit Athens' senior citizens.

On Saturday, April 27, approximately 30 Ohio University students will work side by side with RSVP volunteers to help some neighbors get a start on spring clean-up. Athens area senior citizens were invited last month to submit their "work orders" for garden and yard work, and other outdoor fix-up projects at their homes. The event was originally scheduled for April 13 but was postponed because of rain.

Conceived by Caroline Vaughn, COAD staff member, as part of her ALA experience, the goal of this event is to bridge the generation gap while lending a helping hand.

"It's a project that really appeals to college students," said Mandy Pratt of the Ohio University Center for Community Service, who has had to direct many eager volunteers to other service projects.

The event has generated such an overwhelming response that another Community Roots day may be organized for later in the spring.

"This project that helps to break down generation barriers and offers an opportunity for area residents to share their life experiences," Pratt said. "Volunteerism is an important part of the college experience and is part of being a good citizen."

The Ohio University Center for Community Service works in partnership with campus and community providing service opportunities that benefit the community, foster mutual learning and prepare students for responsible citizenship. To find out about this or other volunteer opportunities contact the center at 539-4007, 033 Baker Center.
