ATHENS, Ohio -- The Department of Academic Affairs will host its first "Spotlight on Learning" on May 16 and 17. This multi-venue event will provide an opportunity for faculty and students to share information regarding their scholarship of teaching and learning. The Thursday session will be followed by a campus reception with President Glidden and the provosts.
Through poster presentations, roundtable discussions, demonstrations and presentations, faculty from the Ohio University Athens and regional campuses will describe how they cultivate learning experiences that are truly learner-centered and customized to their students' learning styles.
This event will also include presentations by Presidential Teacher Awardees, Distinguished Professors, and University Professors, as well as President Robert Glidden, Interim Provost Gary Schumacher, Incoming Provost Stephen Kopp and guest keynote speaker from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Dr. Randall Phillis.
Phillis is an associate professor who, with a colleague, has redesigned the large-section Biology 100 courses at UMASS. This redesign achieved three goals: 1) improvement in student learning, engagement and attendance, 2) improvement in the transfer of learning to higher-level Biology courses and 3) more efficient use of faculty time.
See the Spotlight on Learning Web site at www.ohiou.edu/learningfair/ for a complete conference schedule of sessions, locations and times.
Please also plan to attend the campus reception, with the president and provosts, following their session on Thursday afternoon.
