ATHENS, Ohio -- Alden Library staff members invite interested individuals to join in a celebration of the dedication and creativity of the 2001-2002 Faculty/Librarian Information Competency (FLIC) grantees from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. Friday, March 29, on the library's fourth floor. The four faculty-librarian pairs have been working together this academic year to integrate Information Competency skills into a pre-existing course.
Grantees will participate in an informal panel discussion about what worked well for them and what questions they still have about information competency in the classroom, and attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions. The honorees include faculty members Marsha Dutton, Jacqueline Glasgow, Sally Marinelle and Norma Pecora and librarians Jack Epstein, Cheryl Ewing, Wanda Weinberg and Laura Windsor. Snacks will be served. For more information on this event, contact Sherri Saines at saines@ohiou.edu.
This year's FLIC grant proposals are due April 1. The idea of the FLIC grant is that faculty will team up with a librarian who specializes in their field to design coursework that emphasizes the finding and evaluating of information. Both members of the team are awarded as much as $1,000 for revamping the syllabus of an existing course or creating a new class with an emphasis on Information Competency.
This arrangement is designed to address the frustrations of faculty who report decreased quality of sources on research assignments, of students who do not understand how to find more effective sources, and of librarians who struggle to keep faculty up to date with new resources. Faculty who are interested in applying for this year's FLIC grants will find this event informative and inspirational.
