ATHENS, Ohio -- Despite finishing with the third best weigh-in during week five of Recycle Mania 2002, Ohio University held on to second place in the competition. Unfortunately, first-place Bowling Green State University increased its lead by recording the competition's best one-week weight of 6.1 pounds per student living on campus. Miami University was second this week with 5.6 pounds, Ohio third with 5.2 and Harvard University fourth with 4.5 pounds.
Bowling Green leads the competition with a total weight of 25.5 pounds, while Ohio University is second at 23.9. Third-place Miami improved to 22.7 pounds while Harvard is last with 21 pounds per student.
"We are in a good place because we are close to the lead," said Ohio University Refuse and Recycling Manager Ed Newman. "Now is the time to make a move on Bowling Green because they are on spring break next week along with Miami. If we can post high numbers the next several weeks, especially the week after we come back from spring break, we will have a good chance to win."
The schools are competing for the Recycle Mania trophy, which will be presented to the winning school after the 10-week competition is completed.
Ohio University Refuse and Recycling will recognize the dining hall and green that recycles the most trash at a March 28 cookout between the East and South Greens. The band Peach Melba will provide the entertainment.
