ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University recorded Recycle Mania 2002's best weigh-in during week four, but made up little ground on first place Bowling Green State University. The Bobcats weighed in at 5.3 pounds per student living on campus, but BGSU countered with an impressive weight of 5.2 pounds to maintain its lead in the 10-week competition.
Bowling Green leads the competition with a total weight of 19.4 pounds, while Ohio University is in second at 18.7. Miami University improved its total weight to 16.8 pounds and broke a third-place tie with Harvard University by weighing in at 4.9 pounds per student. Harvard trails the field after posting the week's lowest weight of 4.5 pounds and now has a total of 16.4 pounds per student.
"So far it has been a pretty tight race with no clear winner yet," said Ohio University Refuse and Recycling Manager Ed Newman. "Bowling Green is doing a heck of a job, but Miami has slipped a little compared to last year. The next few weeks my staff will be prodding and pushing our awareness campaigns to keep our numbers up as everyone prepares to leave for spring break."
The schools are competing for the Recycle Mania trophy, which will be presented to the winning school after the 10-week competition is completed.
