ATHENS, Ohio -- The results from the third week of Recycle Mania 2002 dropped Ohio University into second place for the first time this year.
After leading the four-team competition the first two weeks, Ohio University fell out of a first-place tie with Bowling Green State University after posting the week's third-best weigh-in of 4.2 pounds per student living on campus. BGSU had the week's best total of 5.0 pounds and now leads the competition with 14.2 pounds, compared to Ohio University's 13.4.
Harvard University had the most surprising week, posting the second-best weight of 4.5 pounds to move into a tie for third overall with Miami University at 11.9 pounds. Miami had the most disappointing week with a weigh-in of 3.9 pounds per student.
"Our local media outlets and volunteers have done an excellent job of spreading the word about Recycle Mania recently, so I suspect our fourth week's numbers will be much better," said Ohio University Refuse and Recycling Manager Ed Newman. "If everyone recycles even a little bit more, it would amount to an Ohio University win. There are only so many resources out there to use before our planet can no longer physically handle the demand. That fact alone makes recycling very important."
The schools are competing for the Recycle Mania trophy, which will be presented to the winning school after the 10-week competition is completed.
