ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University showed off its consistency in the second week of "Recyclemania 2002." Unfortunately, that was not good enough to remain alone in first place. The second weigh-in witnessed the Bobcats registering 4.6 pounds per student on campus for the second straight week, while all three of its opponents increased their recycling numbers. Miami University had the best recycling week with 4.8 pounds per student living on campus, Bowling Green State University was second with 4.7 and Harvard University brought up the rear with 3.8.
After two weeks in the 10-week competition, Ohio University fell into a tie with Bowling Green at 9.2 pounds of recyclables per student. Miami moved up to third with 8.0, while Harvard dropped one spot to fourth with a 7.4 average per student.
"Like I expected, Miami is starting to come on strong after a slow start just like last year," said Ohio University Refuse and Recycling Manager Ed Newman. "If we are going to retain our lead, we're going to have to recycle at a higher rate. We aren't doing badly, but we can do a lot better."
Last week, Ohio University took the early lead with 4.6 recycled pounds per student on campus. Bowling Green was second with 4.5, Harvard was third with 3.6 and Miami brought up the rear with 3.2.
The schools are competing for the Recyclemania 2002 trophy, which will be presented to the winning school.
