A Letter to Faculty and Staff from Interim Provost Gary Schumacher

Faculty and Staff of Ohio University

We are all deeply shocked and saddened by the events that have unfolded in Washington, D.C., New York and across the nation. We are monitoring the situation as it unfolds and are making necessary adjustments. Based on current information, we have decided that it is in the best interest of Ohio University students for the university to remain open and employees continue working as scheduled. This is a time of fear and trauma for the nation and for our students. I ask faculty to be understanding regarding class absences as they may be related to personal concerns that students may have for friends or family. I also encourage faculty to respond to the needs of students in their classes regarding a desire to discuss and understand the events that have unfolded today.

Because of Tuesday's events, anger and frustration may arise that could lead to confrontations and the assignment of blame. It is important that we all do everything possible to ensure that such confrontations and violence do not occur. I urge you to assist the university in helping the students and community respond in an appropriate and understanding manner.

The Ohio University staff stands ready to provide assistance and support to any students needing it. Students needing assistance should call the Dean of Students Office, (740) 593-1800.

A number of university events have already been cancelled or postponed because of these events. These include the "Dialogue on Diversity" forum scheduled for Friday and the Thursday night football game with North Carolina State. Please check the university Web site for other changes in the schedule of events and for possible rescheduling of postponed events.

We will keep the university community informed about other university responses to today's events by news releases and Web updates. General information can also be obtained by calling (740) 593-4000.

Thank you for your assistance in this time of crisis and concern in our nation.

Gary Schumacher
Interim Provost
