Libraries acquiring Jewish Heritage Video Collection

ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University Libraries has acquired the Jewish Heritage Video Collection (JHVC), a set of nearly 200 feature films, documentaries and television programs created to explore the heritage of American Jews through the unique resources of film and television. Containing an array of American and foreign productions, the JHVC strives to present an innovative, inclusive approach to Jewish education.

The videos address vital issues of Jewish history, identity and culture and were chosen for both quality and relevance. Included are such works as Woody Allen's Annie Hall, The Jack Benny Show, Schindler's List and the documentary Anne Frank Remembered. There also are 24 children's films that are useful for educating youngsters about the holidays and the life of Jewish immigrants.

The JHVC also provides 10 courses based on the collection. The courses, which include self-study guides, cover a wide range of topics, including American Jewish Comedy: An Introduction and Perspectives on the Holocaust: A Course for Adolescents. Anyone wishing to teach or join in a group to take a course is permitted to copy the materials.

The acquisition of the JHVC was made possible by a matching grants program supported by Steven Spielberg's Righteous Persons Foundation, Alan Fortunoff and the Charles H. Revson Foundation. The tapes will be available for circulation through the Ohio University Instructional Media and Technology Services in Alden Library on the university's Athens campus and may be checked out with a valid Ohio University student ID or a Community Borrower's Card.

A complete listing of the collection's films and courses is available on the Web at www.ou-hillel.org/jhvc.html.
