ATHENS, Ohio - Capping a phenomenal freshman season, outside hitter
Katie Smith was named the East Division Player of the Week for
Mid-American Conference volleyball on Monday.
Smith, who ended the season with 22 double-doubles in 27 matches and
six matches with 20 or more kills, totaled 56 kills in the three
matches played last week. She posted 21 each against Marshall on
Tuesday and Buffalo on Sunday, while finishing with 14 kills in the
upset of Akron on Friday.
The Downers Grove, Ill., native was the second Ohio player to earn
the conference's award this season. Sophomore Laura Hageman earned
the accolade on Oct. 1 after leading the Bobcats to a pair of wins.
Smith ended the year with the fifth-highest single-season dig total
in Ohio history (402), also ranking third in the Mid-American
Conference. Smith led the Bobcats in both kills and digs this season.
Ohio ended the 2001 season just one win shy of the MAC tournament.
The Bobcats won six of their last seven matches to finish 11-16 and
9-9 in the MAC.
