Scholarships Support Community Service
ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio University students Jim Harris of Zanesville and Leslie Thornton of Columbus are the initial recipients of the Stocklen-Jacoby Community Service Scholarships from the Ohio University Center for Community Service. The scholarships, which are supported by an endowment from alumnus Edward Stocklen, are designed to provide support to students who have a commitment to public service and display solid academic performance.
As part of the scholarship requirements, recipients work 10 hours a week at the center. Harris, who is majoring in marketing and visual communications, has devoted his time to organizing volunteers to work concessions at home football games, with a percentage of the concession profits donated to the Ohio University Coalition for Habitat for Humanity. Thornton, an interpersonal communications major, helped to organize the center's 14th annual Volunteer Fair and is developing service-learning projects. Both help to connect student volunteers with local non-profit organizations, such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, ATCO and Rural Action.
Applicants are required to submit an essay, resume, three references and participate in an interview with the center's director, Merle Graybill. The recipients are chosen based on their "willingness to provide leadership to community service activities that would benefit Athens County," said Terry Hogan, Ohio University dean of students.
The Center for Community Service, established in 1988, works to provide service opportunities that benefit the community, foster mutual learning and prepare students for responsible leadership. Applications for next year's Stocklen-Jacoby Service Scholarships will be available in February.
