Ohio University Dean Named to Education Commission
ATHENS, Ohio - James Heap, dean of Ohio University's College of Education, has been appointed to the Governor's Commission on Teaching Success. The appointment offers Heap and his colleagues the opportunity to shape the future of education in the state.
The 46-member commission is charged with recommending policies that foster a high level of competency among teachers in Ohio. Heap is the only dean of a college of education on the commission.
"Through the work of the commission, Ohio has the opportunity to pull ahead of all states in teacher recruitment, retention and instructional leadership," Heap said. "From the combined efforts of all stakeholders in education, we will see continuous improvement in teacher quality and student learning."
The commission will advise the governor, Ohio General Assembly, State Board of Education and Ohio Board of Regents on matters relating to teacher recruitment and preparation, professional development, support and retention. Its first meeting is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 16, in Columbus, and final recommendations are due by Dec. 31, 2002.
