Championship Seasons Come to an End
ATHENS, Ohio -- Last Saturday, the field hockey team lost at No. 3 seed Wake Forest, 2-1, in the first round of the NCAA Field Hockey Championships. On Friday, the No. 1 seeded Bobcat soccer team lost, 2-1, in four overtimes to Central Michigan in the Mid-American Conference semifinals in Athens. Despite the losses, both teams enjoyed successful seasons.
The field hockey team enjoyed one of its most successful seasons ever, winning the MAC regular season and tournament titles, advancing to the NCAA Championships for the first time and attaining a No. 9 national ranking. Ohio ended the season with a 16-5 overall record and a 9-1 mark in the MAC. Seniors Ali Johnstone, Lauren Mazziotto and Brea Webster made first-team All-MAC, while sophomore Elizabeth Holtzman, senior Tara Elliott and junior Andrea Voros were named second team. Johnstone also was named MAC Player of the Year.
The women's soccer team, which lost despite outshooting the Chippewas, 44-12, finished the season 12-9 overall and 10-2 in the MAC. Senior Nicki Pendleton was named to the MAC first team, while junior Abby Leopold and sophomore Christel Schiering made the second team. On Sunday, Miami won the MAC tournament title and an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships with a 3-1 victory over Central Michigan.
