Students to Promote Off-Campus Fire Safety
ATHENS, Ohio - More than 100 Ohio University
student-volunteers will distribute batteries and safety information
to off-campus student residents on Saturday, Nov. 10, as part of a
door-to-door program to promote fire safety. The effort, "One Alarm
That Could Save Your Life," is being coordinated by the Athens
County Red Cross with the support of the Athens Fire Department and
the Ohio University Dean of Students Office.
The event coordinator, Lindsay Ripley, a senior health
services administration major, hopes to reach about 1,000 student
residences in Athens. The volunteers will launch their effort with
an 11 a.m. meeting Saturday at the Athens Middle School. Ripley's
interest in fire safety was piqued by an internship she is doing at
the Athens County Red Cross office.
"This is a worthwhile project that will hopefully make
students more aware of the importance of fire safety, and it could
save lives," Ripley said. "It's important for students to realize
what can cause a fire, to have smoke alarms and to check the
batteries."
Energizer, Duracell and Kroger donated the batteries, coupons
for batteries and gift certificates that will be distributed.
Volunteers will include members of various Ohio University
student organizations including Future Health Care Administrators,
the women's softball team, men's and women's track teams, Alpha Phi
Omega national service fraternity, Delta Upsilon fraternity and the
Ohio University Red Cross Association.
