Ohio Rushes Past Central Michigan, 52-3

ATHENS, Ohio (October 21, 2000) -- Dontrell Jackson ran for 141 yards and a touchdown and Chad Brinker added three TD runs as Ohio University piled up 444 yards on the ground in a 52-3 victory over Central Michigan on Oct. 21st.

Ohio tied a school record with seven rushing touchdowns.

Jackson, the quarterback for the Bobcats (5-3, 3-2 Mid-American Conference), averaged more than 14 yards on his 10 carries. Brinker, who scored on runs of 7, 10 and 4 yards, added 81 yards on 14 carries.

Central Michigan (1-6, 1-3) opened the scoring on Paul Savich's 28-yard field goal, but the Bobcats' option attack dominated the rest of the way. The Chippewas lost their fifth game in a row.

Ohio, which stretched its winning streak to three, threw only 11 passes, completing four for 63 yards. But the Bobcats ran the ball 62 times for 444 net yards rushing. The Bobcats came into the game ranked sixth nationally in rushing with 290.3 yards per game.

Raynald Ray, Keland Logan and Wiz White each added a rushing TD for the Bobcats.

Ohio had not beaten the Chippewas since 1980, going 0-13-1 over the past two decades.

Game Notes

  • Ohio scored seven rushing touchdowns in the game to tie the school record ... The record was set against Western Michigan in 1953
  • CMU's only score was a 28-yard field goal on the opening possession of the game ... After the opening drive, CMU only entered Ohio territory on one of the remaining 11 drives.
  • Sophomore Quarterback Dontrell Jackson completed 3-of-7 passes for 44 yards to give him 770 passing yards this season, surpassing his total from last year (745) ... He has also passed his rushing total from a year ago (528) with 141 yards on 10 carries against CMU to give him 532 yards on 92 carries ... It was his second 100-yard rushing game of the season, third of his career
  • Sophomore placekicker Kevin Kerr had another great game ... he was a perfect 7-of-7 on PATs to extend his streak to 30-straight made ... He connected on a 44-yard field goal, giving him 10 on the season ... That marks the fifth most in a season by a Bobcat, just four shy of the school mark ... He was also called on for his first punt attempt of his career on a pooch situation ... He booted the punt 25 yards to pin CMU in at the 15-yard line ... He has 60 points on the season, just two points shy of the best kick-scoring season in Ohio history.
  • Sophomore tailback Chad Brinker scored three of Ohio's touchdowns in the game ... he now has seven rushing scores on the year ... He has 54 points on the season, two touchdowns shy of entering the schools top 10 for scoring in a season
  • Senior Z-back Raynald Ray had four punt returns for 61 yards ... He now has the third-highest punt return yardage in a career with 567 yards ... his 299 punt return yards on the season is also third-most in school history, 74 yards shy of the school record.
  • Punter Dave Zastudil had just two punts in the game - a perfect pooch punt of 26 yards and a season-long 65-yarder that just barely rolled into the endzone for a touchback ... He is still on pace to set the MAC career record with a 44.3 career average thus far.
  • Ohio tallied 507 yards of total offense, the seventh-best mark in school history
  • Ohio's 444 rushing yards is the third best game in school history ... Only three other teams in I-A have topped that mark this season ... Ohio has 2476 rushing yards on the season, already the eighth-best season in school history.
  • Senior Duffer Duffy had three near interceptions ... in the first quarter, he had an interception called back for a roughing the passer penalty.
  • Strong safety Chris London and linebacker Tom Weilbacher each had an interception for the Bobcats ... It gives the squad 11 picks on the year by seven different players.
  • Team captains - Dave Patton, Jay Roden, Mike Fox
  • Ohio Athletics' Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) claimed first-place in the homecoming float contest (for non-Greek organizations).
  • Ohio will next play on Nov. 4 at Miami ... It is the third-straight meeting in which Ohio will face the RedHawks after an open date.
