ATHENS, Ohio (October 18, 2000) -- For the first time, beginning winter quarter, Ohio University will offer term-based online classes. The last two years, the Division of Lifelong Learning has offered summer online courses to students and recently decided to expand the program to include the academic quarters. The Ohio University Online program will offer between 12 and 30 classes each quarter, including 14 this winter.
"The primary reason for offering online courses is to make classes accessible and convenient for people who can't come to campus," said Ohio University Director of Summer Sessions Pam Brown. "This program is not intended to take traditional students out of classrooms, but to offer 'stopped out' students who can't attend a traditional classroom an opportunity to finish their degree."
The online classes cover a variety of disciplines, including English, math, music, economics, psychology and business. Every class is guaranteed regardless of the number of students enrolled. The classes cost the same as traditional university classes, and students not previously enrolled at Ohio University must apply for non-degree admission. Previously enrolled students can sign up for classes through TRIPS, the university's telephone and Web registration program.
Last summer, the Ohio University Online program received positive feedback from participating students. A survey done by Lifelong Learning indicated that students most enjoyed working at their own pace and the convenience and flexibility the classes provided.
"This program is not for everyone," Brown cautioned. "You don't have to be great with computers, but you do have to be an independent, self-driven student to do well."
