ATHENS, Ohio (September 6, 2000) -- Mary Atkinson has been appointed director of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at Ohio University. She began work on the Athens campus Aug. 21.
As director, Atkinson will lead a staff of 10 in the office, which is part of the Vice President for Research division. ORSP provides a variety of services to faculty and staff who are interested in securing grants from state and federal agencies as well as businesses and private organizations.
During the next year, Atkinson will direct several new initiatives for faculty and staff, including the development of new workshops and training programs designed to offer instruction in everything from writing a grant proposal to creating a project budget.
"This university is on the threshold of rapid growth, with many young faculty coming on board," Atkinson said. "I look forward to working with them to obtain external funding."
Atkinson has 13 years of experience in higher education, most recently serving as assistant vice chancellor for research and director of sponsored programs at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University in Greensboro, N.C. She also has held positions at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
"Mary Atkinson was selected because of her extensive experience and her dedication to building a research and sponsored program office that will be attentive to faculty needs," said John Bantle, vice president for research at Ohio University. "I am delighted she is with us as we enter a dynamic phase of continued growth in research, scholarship and creative activity at Ohio University."
Atkinson received a bachelor's degree in business administration from the State University of New York at Buffalo and currently is completing a master's degree in business and policy studies from Empire State College in New York.
