ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University's Russ College of Engineering and Technology Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Lonnie Welch was named the recipient of the Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stuckey Jr. Professorship. Charles and Marilyn Stuckey established the endowment which supports the professorship in 2000.
Stuckey, a native of Lancaster, Ohio, earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the university in 1966. He is chairman of RSA Security Inc. of Bedford, Mass., is a partner in RSA Ventures and has more than 30 years experience in general management and sales technology. Stuckey was inducted into the Russ College Academy of Distinguished Graduates in April 2000 and has recently been elected to the Ohio University Foundation Board.
Welch was selected for his outstanding teaching abilities and his research contributions in network security. The endowed professorship allows the college to acknowledge and reward a deserving professor for his or her teaching and scholarly achievements by providing a salary supplement and travel funds for professional development.
Welch's research interests include real-time systems, distributed computing and software/systems engineering. He is the co-author of more than 60 articles concerning his research discoveries in his field. Welch holds a doctorate from The Ohio State University. Prior to joining Ohio University he was a tenured associate professor at the University of Texas at Arlington and was the co-director of the Parallel and Distributed Real-Time Systems Laboratory.
Since joining Ohio University in 1999, Welch has secured funding of more than $1.9 million from several federal agencies including NASA and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
