ATHENS, Ohio -- Renowned best-selling author, columnist, educator, TV personality and national speaker Mike Riera will host a workshop about developing effective communication between parents and their teen-agers on Saturday, Aug. 4, at Ohio University's Southern Campus in Ironton, Ohio.
His 1995 book, "Uncommon Sense for Parents With Teenagers," provides parents with no-nonsense, practical advice for understanding teen-agers. The book instructs parents to serve as a consultant rather than a manager to their teens.
Riera is the adolescent adviser for CBS's "The Saturday Morning Early Show." He also hosts a daily show for teen-agers called "Life in Progress" on Trackers TV, which is part of the Oxygen network. He is a frequent guest on many radio and TV talk shows, including "Oprah," "48 Hours," "The Today Show," "The View" and "National Public Radio." He also is a partner in "The Diary Project," an online forum for teen-agers. Before working in the media, Riera spent 19 years as a counselor, dean of students, teacher and consultant.
The workshop, co-sponsored by the Southern Campus's Gear Up and Together We Can programs, costs $10 and participants should preregister by Aug. 1. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 4 at Bowman Auditorium. Participants are eligible to receive one Ohio University credit hour for attending the workshop.
