ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University President Robert Glidden has been named chair of the Inter-University Council of Ohio (IUC). Glidden, whose one-year term as head of the statewide consortium of public educational institutions began July 1, was previously vice chair of the IUC.
As head of the association that represents Ohio's 13 public universities and two free-standing medical colleges, Glidden helps guide issues that affect higher education throughout the state and serves as a spokesperson for the association on relevant issues during the year.
The council works to sustain and improve public higher education by promoting interests and concerns that are pertinent to its members. The association engages in public relations, research and government liaison work on behalf of its members.
"The IUC offers an opportunity for representatives of the state's public institutions to work together for the common good of higher education in Ohio," Glidden said. "These are challenging and exciting times for higher education in the state, and I look forward to continuing the good work of the council, especially in working with policymakers to strengthen the educational opportunities in Ohio."
Glidden, 64, has been president of Ohio University since July 1, 1994. A native of Iowa, he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees and doctorate from the University of Iowa.
Previously he was at Florida State University for 15 years, first as professor and dean of the School of Music and then as provost and vice president for academic affairs. During his career he has been a member of the faculties at Wright State University, Indiana University and The University of Oklahoma, and he was dean of music at Bowling Green State University. He also served as the executive director of the National Association of Schools of Music in Washington, D.C.
Glidden has been active in national higher education affairs. He was founding chair of the Council on Higher Education Accreditation, and he is a member of the Ohio Aerospace Institute, the American Council on Education Commission on Leadership and Institutional Effectiveness, the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission and the Board of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. He has been a consultant or evaluator for more than 60 colleges and universities across the United States.
IUC member institutions include Bowling Green State, Central State, Cleveland State, Kent State, Miami, Ohio State, Ohio, Shawnee State, Wright State and Youngstown State universities; the universities of Akron, Cincinnati and Toledo; Medical College of Ohio at Toledo and Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.
