ATHENS, Ohio (June 12, 2001) -- David Descutner, professor and interim director in the Ohio University School of Interpersonal Communication, has been named interim dean of University College and associate provost for undergraduate studies for the 2001-02 academic year, effective Sept. 1. He replaces Patricia Bayer Richard, who is retiring in August.
"I'm very excited about this opportunity," Descutner said. "I've always been a big fan of University College and feel that it's purpose is central to the undergraduate educational mission of the university. The mission of University College and the undergraduate mission are intertwined."
University College assists students who want to explore a variety of areas of study before selecting a major. Typically, undecided freshmen work with both a faculty adviser and a University College professional adviser to make informed choices. The college offers bachelor's degrees in criminal justice and specialized studies.
"Students are our first priority, and that is the approach I will take," Descutner said. "There are many dedicated advisers in University College who have the students' best interests at heart. I share their commitment to advising because I've seen what a difference it makes in the lives of students.
"I look to continue the fine work of Patti Richard, who has been very effective in her position as dean," Descutner added. "If I can do that, I will consider myself to be successful."
The search for a permanent dean will begin next year under the direction of Gary Schumacher, who will serve as interim provost beginning July 1.
"I'm delighted that Dr. Descutner has agreed to serve as interim dean of University College," said Provost Sharon Brehm. "To this position, he brings great energy, creativity and an extraordinary commitment to excellence in undergraduate education. I know that both University College and the entire university will benefit greatly from his leadership."
Descutner joined the university in 1979. He earned his bachelor's degree from Slippery Rock University and his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Illinois.
