ATHENS, Ohio (June 5, 2001) -- Ohio University President Robert Glidden has been reelected to the board of the Council on Higher Education Accreditation, a Washington-based organization that advocates for academic quality through rigorous higher education accreditation standards.
"We are very pleased that Bob is continuing to serve on our board of directors," said CHEA President Judith Eaton. "As a past chair and as a key leader in the founding of CHEA, he provides us great insight and wisdom. He's just wonderful.
Glidden previously served as the president of the National Association of Schools of Music and as a member of the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation Board of Directors. He chaired the COPA Board from 1981 to 1983, and he served on the Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors Board of Directors from October 1993 to June 1996.
"It is crucial for the higher education community to enforce rigorous accreditation standards," Glidden said. "At the same time, the community needs an active voice in the regulatory process in Washington. I am proud to be reelected to the board and look forward to helping the Council meet its mission."
CHEA represents higher education interests before federal accreditation regulators, and it promotes academic excellence by recognizing self-regulating organizations. One of CHEA's roles is to balance the interests of the professions and academic institutions through accreditation. It is also currently involved with challenging issues of quality assurance in distance education.
Other board members include University of Virginia President John T. Casteen III, Rice University President Malcolm Gillis, Gettysburg College President Gordon A. Haaland and Lafayette College President Arthur J. Rothkopf.
