Ohio Football Falls To Akron, 23-20

ATHENS, Ohio-AP (September 23, 2000) -- Zac Derr kicked an 18-yard field goal with 24 seconds left as Akron beat Ohio 23-20 on Sept. 23.

Derr's third field goal of the game and second of the fourth quarter gave the Zips (2-2, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) the win after Ohio's Jamel Patterson tied it at 20 on a 58-yard touchdown run with 11 minutes to go.

Brandon Payne and Tony McCray had 1-yard touchdown runs for Akron in the first quarter. After Derr's 44-yard field goal gave the Zips a 17-0 lead, Ohio (2-2, 0-1) cut it to 17-3 on Kevin Kerr's 20-yard field with 1:11 left in the half.

Dontrell Jackson scored on a 4-yard run and Kerr kicked a 48-yard field goal in the third to pull the Bobcats within four.

Payne led Akron with 61 yards rushing, while Lavell Blanchard had 92 yards receiving on six catches. Butchie Washington threw for 258 yards.

Patterson rushed for 107 yard on 10 carries and Raynald Ray caught three passes for 82 yards for Ohio. Jackson threw for 92 yards and rushed for 50.
