ATHENS, Ohio (May 16, 2001) -- Ohio University's Office of Research Communications has received two national awards in the annual Circle of Excellence Awards contest sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, an international education association of 2,900 member institutions serving professionals in communications, alumni relations and philanthropy.

Perspectives, the university's biannual magazine of research and creative activity, received a gold medal for overall excellence in the Research Magazine category. Kelli Whitlock is editor of Perspectives, Andrea Gibson is the assistant editor and Christina Ullman is the senior designer.

There were 17 entries in the Research Magazine category, which is a new awards listing for CASE. Awards for research magazines in the past were given through a Special Constituency Magazine category. Penn State University received a silver medal for Research/Penn State magazine. No bronze was awarded. This is Perspectives' second CASE medal for overall excellence; the magazine received a bronze medal in 1998. The magazine also received honors for Periodical Staff Writing in 1998 and Best Articles of the Year in 1999, both from CASE.

Research Communications also received a silver medal for Research, Medicine and Science News Writing in the annual competition. The university's entry included five stories written by Whitlock and Gibson on topics ranging from a chemist's work on a new measuring tool for blood glucose to a psychologist's studies of naming trends.

The University of Arkansas and the University of Buffalo both received bronze medals. No gold medal was awarded in this category, which included 22 entries from universities around the nation. This is Ohio University's second CASE medal in this category; a bronze medal was awarded in 1999.

The Office of Research Communications is part of the Vice President for Research division. Perspectives can be viewed online at http://www.ohiou.edu/perspectives/. Research news releases can be found at http://www.ohiou.edu/researchnews/.
