ATHENS, Ohio (May 4, 2001) -- Ohio University's Division of Lifelong Learning is hosting a bus trip to Ohio's Amish communities in Holmes County from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 12.
The trip is part of the "Shop Till You Drop" series available through Lifelong Learning's Community Connections program. Jayne Miller, travel consultant for the Travel Channel's "Travel Daily Show," will host the tour. Owner of Amish Kitchen Tours and a resident of Holmes County, Miller is extremely knowledgeable about the Amish culture.
The tour will stop at several unique shops in Berlin, Walnut Creek and other Holmes County stores, including the Holmes County Amish Flea Market. An authentic Amish meal at the Der Dutchman is planned for lunch as well as a stop for pastries at Miller's Bakery, cheese at Heini's Cheese House and chocolates at Coblentz's.
"Jayne's tours stop at places that are off the beaten path," said Lisa Dael, coordinator of noncredit programs for the Division of Lifelong Learning. "Since she is so familiar with the area, she can take you to stops that you might miss if you go on your own."
The cost of the Amish tour is $55, which includes lunch, admission and transportation. Participants will board the bus at 6 a.m. at Peden Stadium. Deadline for registration is May 11 and participants can register online at www.ohiou.edu/noncredit by calling Community and Professional Programs at (740) 593-1521 or stopping by 115 Haning Hall.
