ATHENS, Ohio (April 10, 2001) -- Ohio University Associate Provost for Graduate Studies Gary Schumacher will serve as interim provost beginning July 1, President Robert Glidden announced to Faculty Senate Monday night.
Schumacher's appointment will remain in effect while the university seeks a replacement for Provost Sharon Stephens Brehm, who is leaving to become chancellor of Indiana University Bloomington and vice president for academic affairs. Glidden said he hopes to have a permanent provost named by this fall, but Schumacher has agreed to stay on longer if needed.
"I feel very fortunate that an individual with Gary's skill and knowledge of the university is available for this position," said Glidden. "I am confident he will do a fine job and continue his record of outstanding university leadership."
Schumacher, also a professor of psychology, joined the Ohio University faculty in 1970 as assistant professor of psychology. He served as the department of psychology chair from 1977 to 1982 and from 1992 to 1996. He has served several terms on Faculty Senate and also on a number of department and university committees.
A native of Iowa, Schumacher earned his bachelor of science degree in mathematics and doctorate in psychology from Iowa State University and his master of science in mathematics from Purdue University.
