ATHENS, Ohio (April 4, 2001) -- The Friends of the Libraries of Ohio University are sponsoring the fourth annual Readathon on Tuesday, Apr. 10 in Galbreath Chapel. This 12-hour event celebrates the importance of reading in our culture, the important role the library plays in our lives and the value of student assistants in providing library services.
Terry Anderson, Visiting Professor in Journalism, and Athens Mayor Ric Abel will kick off the Readathon at 9 a.m. Representatives of university colleges, student organizations and community groups will read their favorite pieces of prose, poetry, and oratory to both celebrate reading and to raise money for a scholarship fund for student library workers. Two scholarships were awarded this year from funds generated by the Readathon.
John Ray, Chairman of the event, points out how unique it is to have the opportunity to listen to more than ninety readers read their favorite literary selections. "The variety and quality of readings is a truly enjoyable experience you will not soon forget," said Ray. One treat is the fourth grade classes from The Plains Elementary School reading their favorite selections for one hour beginning at 11:00 a.m.
The public is invited to stop in any time between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., sit down in the quiet, comfortable environment of Galbreath Chapel and listen for as long as you wish to some very interesting people. Help celebrate by attending when someone from your organization or college is reading.
Copies of the Readathon schedule of readers are located in Baker Center on the Ohio University campus, and are listed below.
