Contact: Becky Rothgeb, (740) 446-9603

ATHENS, Ohio (April 4, 2001) -- Ohio University cheerleaders will compete at their first National Cheerleading Association Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla., from Apr. 4 through Apr. 8.

"Our goal is to make cheerleading a spectacular sport," said Becky Rothgeb, Ohio University cheerleading adviser. "We are dedicated to building a strong cheerleading program, and competing at the national level is a step in the right direction."

Twenty cheerleaders will compete at the four-day event, which will consist of a preliminary and final competition. The cheerleaders must demonstrate their best tumbling, pyramid transformations, partner stunts and dance skills to the judges. Of the 25 competing schools ranked Division I-A, only 10 will be chosen to go on to the finals.
